Five thoughts on a Friday

Five thoughts on a Friday:

— Do you know that President Barack H. Obama has a Twitter account? I guess I sort of knew that the Commander in Chief had MySpace and Facebook and Twitter, but I never really gave it much thought until my wife recently brought it to my attention.

While I will admit to recently creating a Twitter page to allow Herald-Standard readers and followers of The Right Side another way to access information, something about Obama’s Twitter page makes my stomach turn. I mean, he is the president after all and you kind of hope he has more important things to do with his time than Tweet gloats about his recent ramrod legislation. But, let’s be honest, there are lot of things about Obama that make my stomach turn.

— Do any of you watch the television show “V” on ABC?

It is a remake of an alien invasion show from the early 1980s and — outside of the fact that you can draw endless parallels between the show and the current political climate — it is very good. I recommend watching and seeing for yourself if you can identify who might be the aliens-come-to-earth-to-exterminate-us but pretending to bring “universal health care” and who the resistance-that-must-fight-for-our-future might be. I have done some digging and the creators and writers of the show have denied any hidden message in their storyline. Watch it for yourself. It really isn’t rocket science to see the links.

— After Congress passed the health care overhaul, Obama told reporters and other lawmakers that the move proved that the government works for the American people. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that one, Mr. President.

— I went to the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh last night and got a chance to hold the Stanley Cup.

It was a great experience and one that was truly worth the one-hour wait in line. Outside of their sports museum, which is laden with great items and artifacts, I highly recommend a visit. The cost is minimal and it is easy to lose a day inside the awesome structure.

— Could our president be any more pompous? He went on the CBS Early Show with Harry Smith and touted himself and his amazing accomplishments until it got so deep on the basketball court he was posing on that I thought Smith might slip in it. Talking about his ability to sink a jump shot, Obama opined this beauty. “Its like health care, I always come from behind – I finish strong.” Then, in response to a softball question from Smith about his critics calling him names, Obama went after his political opponents, by name. “Well, I think that when you listen to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck, it’s pretty apparent, and it’s troublesome, but keep in mind that there have been periods in American history where this kind of vitriol comes out. It happens often when you’ve got an economy that is making people more anxious, and people are feeling like there is a lot of change that needs to take place. But that’s not the vast majority of Americans. I think the vast majority of Americans know that we’re trying hard, that I want what’s best for the country.” Sure we do, Mr. President. Really, it is just so apparent. How could we think otherwise?
